History:
The Ukrainian office of the global environmental organization Greenpeace operated from 1991 to 1998. The impetus for its establishment was the anti-nuclear movement in Ukraine following the Chernobyl disaster. In 1994, Greenpeace Ukraine launched several campaigns and projects on energy conservation, smart water use, prevention of toxic waste, pesticide elimination, and the development of sustainable agriculture. The organization also engaged in environmental education for children. It ceased operations in 1998 due to a lack of funding.
In 2022, the organization resumed its activities in Ukraine, focusing again on nuclear issues and investigating damage caused by the Russian invasion in the Chernobyl zone. It also began green reconstruction projects for buildings damaged during the conflict. The official representation of “Greenpeace Ukraine” was registered on June 18, 2024, in Kyiv.
