Medicines for the treatment of breast cancer have been added to the ‘Affordable Medicines’ programme

Ukraine has expanded the list of drugs that can be obtained free of charge or with partial payment via electronic prescription under the state programme ‘Affordable Medicines’. From 31 October 2025, 12 more trade names of drugs intended for the treatment of oncological diseases, in particular breast cancer, have been added to the programme.

The new list includes drugs based on exemestane, letrozole, and tamoxifen. They are being transferred from centralised procurement to pharmacies, allowing patients to obtain the necessary medicines close to home, without waiting for deliveries to hospitals.

This decision enhances the stability and continuity of treatment, as breast cancer therapy often lasts for years. Patients can now regularly receive medications via electronic prescriptions, which increases the accessibility of care and comfort during long-term treatment.

The transition to a reimbursement model also optimises public procurement: expensive medicines remain in the centralised supply system, while more common medicines are transferred to the pharmacy compensation programme, as in EU countries.

Healthcare facilities will continue to use up their remaining stocks of previously purchased drugs to ensure a smooth transition for patients.

The Affordable Medicines Programme operates through a network of pharmacies that have signed an agreement with the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU). Medicines can be obtained with an electronic prescription from a family doctor, therapist or paediatrician.
