A four-year Ukrainian-Swiss project titled TRUE — “Trauma Rehabilitation for Ukraine” has been launched in Kyiv to build a modern, resilient, and people-centered rehabilitation system. The initiative is funded by the Government of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and will be implemented by the Ukrainian charitable foundation Patients of Ukraine in partnership with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH).
The project launch was formalized in Kyiv with the signing of an agreement by Ukraine’s Minister of Health Viktor Liashko and Jacques Gerber, Ambassador of Switzerland and Delegate of the Federal Council for Relations with Ukraine, who is currently on an official visit to the country.
The program is financed with nearly 9 million Swiss francs and will run until 2029. The project aims to strengthen Ukraine’s system of free rehabilitation care, introduce international standards, improve legislation, and enhance professional training. TRUE will support the modernization of education programs, advance the skills of rehabilitation specialists, and equip healthcare institutions with modern rehabilitation technology.
A key focus will be the creation of effective patient pathways — from hospital treatment to returning home and reintegration into society. The initiative will also promote inclusion, support for people with disabilities and veterans, and raise awareness of their rights.
The project will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the National Health Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy, and professional associations. It continues earlier Swiss initiatives in the field of rehabilitation that began in 2018.
According to the Ministry of Health, due to the consequences of the war, around 250,000 Ukrainians require rehabilitation services every year, making the development of a modern rehabilitation system a strategic priority for the country.
