Kyiv has officially been granted UNESCO City of Music status and has joined the organisation’s global network of creative cities. This was announced by the Kyiv City State Administration.
The new status opens up opportunities for the Ukrainian capital to develop its cultural infrastructure, support creative industries and strengthen international cooperation. Kyiv will become part of a global community of cities that promote culture as a driving force for sustainable development.
To implement the initiative, a coordination office will be set up at the Kyiv Municipal Academy of Music named after Glier. It will work on the implementation of a four-year strategic action plan developed by a cross-sectoral team of representatives from government, educational institutions, civil society organisations and the creative sector.
Obtaining the status of City of Music emphasises Kyiv’s role as an important cultural centre in Europe, which continues to assert its identity even in the context of war. It will also contribute to the promotion of Ukrainian music and the strengthening of partnerships with international institutions.
