Ministry of Veterans Affairs pays for driving courses for veterans with disabilities

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine pays for driving lessons for war veterans and their family members who have disabilities and medical conditions that allow them to drive vehicles. These lessons are conducted in adapted cars and are completely free of charge for participants.

The aim of the programme is to increase the independence and mobility of people affected by the war. To date, 59 people have already taken advantage of this opportunity.

Training is conducted in 16 specialised driving schools in 14 regions of Ukraine, seven of which operate on the basis of educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Participants undergo training in adapted vehicles tailored to individual needs.

To apply, you must contact your local veterans’ affairs office at your place of registration or actual residence. Applications can be submitted in either paper or electronic form. It must be accompanied by copies of documents confirming the applicant’s identity, veteran or family member status, disability, rehabilitation programme, as well as a medical certificate of fitness to drive a vehicle and a photograph.

After the application is submitted, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs concludes a tripartite agreement between the participant, the driving school and the Ministry. The cost of training is fully covered by the state.

The project is being implemented as part of the Veteran Policy Strategy until 2030 and the flagship initiative “Barrier-Free Driving Schools” of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. This is part of the National Barrier-Free Strategy launched on the initiative of First Lady Olena Zelenska.
