The organization began its work in 2001 as part of the HIAS International Organization in Ukraine. Already in 2003, it received the status of an executive partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In 2013, HIAS Ukraine established the Right to Protection Charitable Foundation as a separate independent organization. The first area of activity of the Right to Protection Charitable Foundation was assistance to refugees and asylum seekers, which was launched from the moment of establishment of the HIAS office in Ukraine. Since 2014, the Foundation has been assisting internally displaced persons and the population affected by the war. The Foundation opened new offices in eastern Ukraine, monitored the protection of the rights of the affected population and provided legal assistance to the most affected communities in Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipro and Kharkiv regions. The organization had offices in Mariupol, Sievierodonetsk and Sloviansk. Starting from February 24, after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Right to Protection CF significantly expanded its activities, with new program areas and new regions. The Foundation began to provide material assistance, psychological support, social assistance, and registration for financial aid from international organizations. A program called the Coordination and Management of Compact Settlements (CCCM) was also launched.
In 2023, the Polish representative office of the Right to Protection Foundation was opened in Warsaw to support our citizens displaced by the war. The Foundation began providing psychological and legal assistance and protecting the rights of Ukrainians who have temporary protection in Poland. Since 2024, it has been a member of the Alliance of Ukrainian Civil Society Organizations.
