On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, Ukraine set a new national record — the largest simultaneous dictation translated into sign language. A total of 195 people with hearing impairments from across the country took part, both in person and online.
The event took place at the Kyiv Vocational College of Applied Sciences, organized by the NGO Vidchui (“Feel”). Lana Vietrova, a representative of the National Register of Records, announced the record and emphasized its importance for promoting inclusivity and accessibility in Ukrainian society.
“You should have seen how important this was for them — to feel united. I am convinced that in a barrier-free society, sign language should become the second official language. Especially now, when we have more and more soldiers who have lost their hearing due to injuries. Knowing sign language is normal for a society that values understanding and empathy,” Vietrova wrote on Facebook.
Organizers noted that this format of the dictation not only promotes the Ukrainian language but also opens new opportunities for people with hearing impairments to take part in cultural initiatives on equal terms.
