Up to €100 million for social housing – EBRD plans to grant loan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is considering granting a loan of up to €100 million for a social housing construction project in Ukraine. The funds are planned to be used to expand the Ladder to Prosperity platform, which provides affordable housing for internally displaced persons, veterans and the elderly.

The programme provides for both rental and purchase housing. The EBRD will make a final decision on granting the loan in November.

The first tranche of €7.1 million will be used to build 182 apartments in the Kyiv region. By 2029, it is planned to build about 1,800 energy-efficient apartments in various regions of Ukraine. The total cost of the initiative is estimated at €167 million.

The new buildings will be constructed in accordance with the international EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) standard, which requires the use of energy-saving technologies, reduction of carbon emissions, and reuse of building materials.

The loan will be granted to two companies, Hansen Affordable Housing and Hansen Affordable Housing Parkway House, established under the management of American entrepreneur Dell Loy Hansen. The businessman founded Hansen Ukrainian Mission after the start of the full-scale invasion to help Ukraine rebuild and develop its housing infrastructure.

This project could become one of the most ambitious examples of international support in the field of affordable housing, aimed at rebuilding Ukrainian communities and improving the quality of life for people who have lost their homes.
