The EU must take into account the security situation in Ukraine when making decisions on temporary protection — Gavronska

Almost 4.3 million Ukrainians currently enjoy the right to temporary protection in European Union countries. This was announced by Ilona Gavronska, Deputy Minister of Social Policy, Family and Unity of Ukraine for European Integration, on the national telethon ‘Yedyni Novyny’ (Unified News).

She stressed that any decisions regarding the termination of the EU Directive on Temporary Protection, which has currently been extended until 4 March 2027, should only be made taking into account the security situation in Ukraine.

‘The European Union showed real solidarity when it introduced this mechanism at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. We are in constant contact with our European partners to ensure that Ukrainians are informed and prepared for possible changes in the conditions of their stay,’ Gavronska said.

According to her, several scenarios are being considered after the expiry of temporary protection. These include switching to other types of residence permits, voluntary return to Ukraine, or obtaining international protection under the Geneva Convention.

‘The key is humanity and taking into account the personal circumstances of each individual. European countries are already considering extending temporary protection for families with children until the end of the school year,’ the official added.

Gavronska emphasised that 64% of Ukrainians currently under temporary protection express a desire to return home. The Ministry of Social Policy, together with European partners, in particular the EU Special Representative for Ukrainians Ilva Johansson, is coordinating further steps for the safe and organised return of citizens.

‘Our task is to help Ukrainians maintain ties with their homeland, support each other and make informed decisions about returning. This will be facilitated by the network of unity that we are forming together with Ukrainian communities abroad,’ Ilona Gavronska concluded.
