Language without barriers — On 22 October, Ukraine celebrates World Speech Day

World Speech Day is a reminder that communication is not limited to words. This day emphasises the importance of equality in communication, respect for different ways of self-expression, and support for every person regardless of their speech characteristics.

For people with speech impairments, challenges arise not only in communication, but also in access to education, services, work, and social interaction. Attentiveness and patience help remove barriers, and society becomes more humane when everyone has the opportunity to be heard.

To make communication comfortable for everyone, it is important to follow simple rules. Do not interrupt the person or speak for them. Let them speak at their own pace. Look them in the eyes, not at their speech characteristics. Stay calm, even if something is unclear, and politely ask for clarification. If the person is more comfortable writing, offer written or alternative forms of communication.

Address the person directly, even if there is an interpreter or companion nearby. Do not make assumptions about their abilities or medical history, and do not ask inappropriate questions. Avoid rushing, and allow space for calm conversation.

Speech disorders can be the result of strokes, injuries, nervous system diseases or combat wounds. For people who are regaining their ability to speak, every word is an effort, a step forward and a victory over pain.

Barrier-free communication is a shared responsibility of society and the state. It begins with humanity in everyday communication and continues with systemic support: speech therapy and psychological services, rehabilitation, inclusive education, and employment opportunities.

Language is not just words. It is a way to be heard and understood. Ukraine becomes stronger when every person — regardless of how they speak — feels dignity, respect, and equality.
