The last reception centre for Ukrainian refugees in Vienna will close by the end of 2025

By the end of 2025, the last reception centre for Ukrainian refugees in the Austrian capital, Quartier Schlossberg, will cease operations. This was reported by ORF television channel, citing Vienna city authorities.

The facility, run by the Volkshilfe organisation, was the last refuge in the federal state where Ukrainians who had fled the war could be accommodated. The centre provided temporary accommodation, food, advice and assistance with registration, paperwork and relocation to other regions of Austria.

During its operation, Quartier Schlossberg provided support to nearly 9,000 Ukrainians. The centre could accommodate more than 200 people at a time. Similar facilities had previously been closed in Vorarlberg and other federal states, leaving Vienna as the only region where temporary reception centres continued to operate.

More than 10,000 Ukrainians currently live in the Austrian capital, and about 30,000 in the country as a whole. According to the Vienna Social Affairs Fund, the state provided migrants with a one-time payment of €190, but this amount has not been revised since 2022.

Plans to close the last centre were announced back in July. After its closure in 2025, Ukrainian migrants in Vienna will only be able to count on individual support programmes or private accommodation.
