Vodafone to lay new submarine internet cable in the Black Sea bypassing Russia

Vodafone Group, in partnership with Vodafone Ukraine, is launching a large-scale project called Kardesa, an underwater cable system that will connect Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia. The new route will run along the bottom of the Black Sea, creating a secure digital corridor between Europe and Asia without involving Russian infrastructure.

The project is of strategic importance for the digital security of Ukraine and the entire Black Sea region. Kardesa will increase the resilience of the telecommunications infrastructure, ensure communication redundancy, and become the basis for the development of modern technologies — from 5G to artificial intelligence.

According to company representatives, the initiative will contribute to the formation of Ukraine’s digital sovereignty. It will also open up new economic opportunities: the creation of data centres, traffic exchange points, the development of network infrastructure, and the emergence of new jobs for engineers, IT specialists, and project managers.

The Kardesa system will have a capacity of over 500 Tbit/s, which will significantly increase traffic volumes for countries in the Black Sea region. The total cost of the project exceeds €100 million.

Construction of the first section will begin in Bulgaria in 2027. The Ukrainian segment will be implemented exclusively in internationally recognised safe zones, provided that the situation in the region remains stable.
