Water quality in Ukraine: from now on, twice as much useful information can be found on EcoThreat

The Monitoring and Environmental Assessment of Water Resources map on EcoThreat now displays data from more than 570 monitoring points in real time.

As explained by the State Agency of Ukraine for Water Resources, previously, the map allowed viewing the water quality in a particular location based on about 30 physical and chemical indicators. These are the indicators that characterize the suitability of water for drinking water intake. Pursuant to the order of the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strelts, the number of publicly available indicators has now been increased to 80.

The monitoring posts now also transmit data on measurements of chemical priority and basin-specific indicators to EcoThreat. These include those stipulated by European requirements, in particular Directives 2000/60/EC and 2008/105/EC.

Priority pollutants include, for example, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. Now everyone can find out the content of these substances in water in a few clicks. The same is true for the concentration of basin-specific synthetic and non-synthetic pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial pollutants.

EcoThreat also now displays the results of research monitoring. This monitoring is conducted in the event of emergencies, water pollution as a result of military operations, etc.

Why is such data needed?

With up-to-date information on water quality, everyone has the opportunity to use water resources more consciously, respond to potential environmental threats in a timely manner, and actively participate in environmental protection.

For local authorities, such information is valuable when planning water intake and making decisions on water treatment by enterprises.

Water quality data is also the basis for making informed decisions in the process of developing strategic planning documents. This makes it possible to both formulate new quality policies and adjust existing environmental and water management strategies.

We have already mentioned that applications for the Ukrainian Enterprise Promotion Awards are now open.
