Ministry of Veterans Affairs develops barrier-free environment for veterans and citizens

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine is implementing barrier-free space standards in its activities, transforming state institutions into models of accessibility and respect for every person. Accessibility is not a formality, but a conscious creation of an environment where everyone can move freely and receive services without obstacles.

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs emphasises that a barrier-free space is not just ramps or handrails, but a comprehensive philosophy of equal opportunities. All elements of buildings must be designed so that they can be used by everyone: people with disabilities, parents with prams, older citizens, as well as those with visual or hearing impairments.

To check the level of accessibility of buildings in Ukraine, you can use the online map ‘City Without Borders’ or the list of criteria defined in the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment. This document outlines the principles of an inclusive environment that all state institutions must comply with.

The ministry emphasises that the development of a barrier-free environment is not a one-off project, but ongoing work to create an open and friendly space for veterans and all citizens who need special support.
