The head of Gymnasium No. 109 explained how she ended up at the centre of a scandal over shorts

The headmistress of Kyiv Gymnasium No. 109 recounted how she found herself in a situation that gained widespread attention on social media and in the press. According to her, the conflict arose after she made a comment to students about their appearance.

“I was on duty in the shelter — it was night-time, and there were alarms. Then I went to Nova Poshta because the Ukrainian component was sending documents. And then this scandal with shorts happened,” said the headmistress. “I asked the children who live nearby to change their clothes, and those who live far away were allowed to stay in shorts that day, but the next day I asked them to come in trousers.”

The educator believes that the situation has been blown out of proportion and reflects problems in society’s attitude towards teachers. “A tragedy occurred in Vinnytsia — people died, but no one is discussing it so actively. Here, it’s a comment about clothing, and it’s been turned into a nationwide scandal. This shows the level of society and respect for teachers,” said the headmistress.

She adds that she has now become an example of how society can bully representatives of the education sector: “I didn’t even expect it, but I became a nationwide example of bullying of teachers and headmasters. That’s how it is.”
