IOM and Ministry of Economy discussed support for employment and labour market recovery in Ukraine

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) continues to support Ukraine in its sustainable recovery, particularly through the development of the labour market. According to a joint survey by the IOM and the Ministry of Economy, 58% of Ukrainian employers reported a shortage of skilled workers in 2024.

Oleksiy Sobolev, Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, and Robert Turner, Head of the IOM Mission in Ukraine, held a meeting on employment and migration policy issues. During the conversation, they discussed IOM’s participation in the development of the National Employment Strategy, as well as support for the retraining and employment of internally displaced persons, people returning from abroad, and veterans.

IOM also contributes to the updating of Ukrainian legislation in line with European Union standards. The organisation is ready to provide expert support in creating mechanisms to attract foreign workers to overcome staff shortages at various skill levels.

“Migration is a key factor in economic development, and we at IOM highly appreciate Ukraine’s comprehensive approach to migration management,” said Robert Turner. “From vocational training for displaced persons to engaging the diaspora in community development, IOM works with the government, civil society and business to make migration a resource for development.”
