Work has begun in Ukraine on a screen adaptation of the 12th-century Old Rus’ epic The Tale of Igor’s Campaign. The project is being developed by the film companies Salameya Film and Pronto Film.
The script and visual concept are currently in development. The team includes director Taras Tomenko (House “Slovo”. The Unfinished Novel) and screenwriter Kostiantyn Konovalov (Firecrosser, Fortress Khadzhibey). Producers are Svitlana Yatsynych (I, Nina) and Maksym Asadchyi (The Guide, Dovbush).
The film will depict Prince Igor’s 1185 campaign against the Cumans. The story is based on the legendary text that Russia has appropriated for centuries. At the heart of the plot is the prince’s struggle, his capture by Khan Konchak, and trials of honor and strength. According to the synopsis, the film will be a historical drama with elements of adventure and action, with a runtime of 100 minutes.
The creators emphasize that The Tale reflects themes of war and resistance that remain relevant today. The geography of Igor’s campaign coincides with modern Ukrainian territories where battles are still ongoing. For this reason, the new adaptation is seen as a cultural reclaiming of Ukraine’s own history and heroes.
The film is currently in the preparation stage, with the first teaser expected soon.
