Veterans will be able to receive more free rehabilitation courses in 2025

Ukrainian veterans are entitled to free rehabilitation in medical facilities that have a contract with the National Health Service of Ukraine. The programme covers both inpatient and outpatient services, and the state fully funds recovery from injuries, operations, strokes, heart attacks or cancer treatment.

Patients receive a full cycle of care — from an initial examination by a physical and rehabilitation medicine doctor to the development of an individual recovery programme. Specialists from various fields are involved in the process: physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, prosthetists, and psychologists. They ensure a personalised approach and compliance with European standards of evidence-based medicine.

The rehabilitation programme includes neurorehabilitation, orthopaedic and cardiorespiratory rehabilitation, pain relief in hospital, and psychological support. All services are provided free of charge to veterans if the treatment takes place in a facility that cooperates with the National Health Service of Ukraine.

To receive assistance, you must have a referral from your family doctor or physical and rehabilitation medicine doctor. Veterans can choose a facility themselves using the analytical panels on the NSZU website in the ‘E-Data’ section. Here you can find a map of medical institutions with valid contracts for rehabilitation assistance packages. The validity of the contract can be checked online or through the NSZU contact centre at 16-77.

In 2025, the state expanded the programme’s capabilities. For veterans with multiple amputations, the number of possible inpatient courses has been increased to 26 per year. This will allow for long-term and phased treatment, taking into account the complexity of each case. For other patients, the number of courses remains between two and eight, depending on need, and the duration of each course is at least 14 days. Up to four courses are provided for children.

The updated programme also provides for mono-services — a type of rehabilitation where the patient receives support from one specialist, such as a physical therapist or speech therapist. This approach increases the effectiveness of treatment and allows for a flexible response to the needs of each patient.
