A professional nursing college opens in Kyiv, founded by the Ukrainian Red Cross

A professional nursing college opens in Kyiv, founded by the Ukrainian Red Cross (URC).The new educational institution is set to become a reset point for Ukraine’s medical training system, which is currently facing a severe shortage of qualified nurses and medical assistants, reports Humanitarian Media Hub.

“I want nursing to truly be a respected profession, as it is today in Europe and around the world. A nurse or medical assistant is the foundation of healthcare delivery within the medical system. So for me, this is not just a college — it’s the new face of the Red Cross,” said URC Director General Maksym Dotsenko during the opening ceremony.

The idea to establish the college emerged as a response to a systemic issue — the shortage of medical personnel, which worsened after the escalation of the war. According to Dotsenko, the dream of creating a dedicated educational institution became reality thanks to cooperation with the French Red Cross. The French partners not only shared their expertise but also provided financial support for the project.

The college is designed not only for young people but also for veterans and combat medics returning to civilian life. They will be able to acquire a new profession that holds strategic importance for the country. French Ambassador to Ukraine Gaël Veyssière emphasized that nurses are the backbone of any healthcare system, and Ukraine should follow the path of European standards.

Natalie Smirnov, Director General of the French Red Cross, noted that Ukraine’s Ministry of Health is already working on updating nursing education programs to meet modern requirements. She stressed that the project is being implemented thanks to the generosity of French citizens and their charitable contributions.

The decision to establish the college was made back in November 2023, and today it opens its doors to those ready to transform healthcare from within.
