On 23 September, the world marks the International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children. The date is intended to draw attention to a problem that remains relevant even in today’s world. Human trafficking can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, education or social status.
Most often, the victims are those who are looking for work or opportunities abroad. Promises of quick money, legal employment or marriage proposals sometimes turn into dangerous schemes. With the development of digital technologies, the risk is also growing due to online dating.
Women and children are considered the most vulnerable group, especially in times of war. Displaced persons often leave their homes in search of safety and support outside the country, and it is at this point that they can become targets for fraudsters.
Experts remind us that it is important to check documents and employment conditions before travelling abroad, not to give passports to strangers, to inform relatives of your whereabouts, and to use only the services of official agencies.
The International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking is a reminder that the right to freedom and security is fundamental for every person.
