The Council of Europe has published a draft convention on the establishment of an international compensation commission for Ukraine

The Council of Europe has presented a draft convention on the establishment of an International Compensation Commission for Ukraine. This was announced by Yevheniia Kravchuk, Deputy Chair of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy and member of the Permanent Delegation to the PACE.

According to her, after the creation of the Register of Damages, the second key element of the mechanism will be formed — a body that will consider applications and award compensation to victims of aggression. Kravchuk stressed that this is an important step towards a comprehensive international mechanism for compensating for the damage caused by Russian aggression to Ukraine and its citizens.

As a reminder, in May 2023, the International Register of Damage, which records the losses caused to Ukraine by the war, began operating in The Hague. The next step is to establish a compensation commission that allows victims to submit claims and receive compensation. The mechanism is being developed with the support of the Council of Europe and involves the participation of other international partners.
