How employers can prevent discrimination against veterans in the workplace

In Ukraine, employers are increasingly faced with the need to adapt workplaces for veterans returning to civilian life. One of the key principles of employment is non-discrimination — an employee’s competence should be the main criterion, and social status or disability should not be an obstacle.

The Constitution of Ukraine guarantees special social protection for military personnel and veterans. This status obliges employers to take additional rights into account when hiring, while creating equal opportunities for all candidates.

Discrimination in employment can take various forms: direct refusal or less favourable treatment, indirect requirements that make it difficult for veterans to access work, incitement to biased practices, or the creation of a hostile atmosphere in the workplace.

Employers are advised to develop internal policies of zero tolerance for discrimination, review HR procedures, train managers and HR professionals in the principles of inclusiveness, and provide channels for anonymous reporting of violations. This approach not only helps to avoid discrimination, but also fosters a culture of respect for people who have unique service experiences and valuable professional skills.
