New rules for transporting pets on trains are now in effect in Ukraine. The changes were initiated by Ukrzaliznytsia to make travelling with pets safer and more comfortable for both animals and passengers.
Large breed dogs can now travel in all types of carriages if they are taller than 45 centimetres at the withers. This requires a ticket for the animal, a muzzle, a leash and veterinary documents. In compartment carriages, luxury sleeping carriages and international RIC carriages, all seats in the compartment must be purchased. On Intercity+ trains, large dogs are placed on the floor next to their owner, provided that seats are booked as a single block in a row.
Small animals, including cats, small breeds of dogs, rabbits or decorative rodents, must travel in carriers with a waterproof bottom. They can be placed on the luggage racks, in your arms or under the seat. It is not necessary to purchase a row for them. Large dogs are not allowed in open-plan carriages.
On regional trains, large dogs are only allowed in the vestibules of the first and last carriages under the supervision of their owners. Domestic birds are allowed to travel in special containers that comply with hand luggage size restrictions.
Guide dogs, service dogs and animals accompanied by military personnel are transported free of charge and do not require the purchase of all seats. Passengers are required to keep the carriage clean and ensure the comfort of those around them. In the event of allergic reactions or discomfort among passengers, the train crew will help find another seat.
