Two underground school-shelters for nearly a thousand children opened in Kherson region

Two new underground educational institutions have begun operating in the Kherson region — in Vysokopillia and Orlov. They will provide face-to-face education for 938 children, even in frontline conditions.

The Vysokopillia base institution is designed for 520 places, but the shelter allows 740 students to be taught in two shifts. Schoolchildren, preschoolers, and pupils of the Centre for Children’s and Youth Creativity will be able to receive education here. The Orlov educational complex “School — Kindergarten” has 150 places and will accept 198 pupils. The school has modern classrooms, medical rooms, cafeterias, recreation areas, and rooms for preschoolers.

By the end of 2025, they plan to open 156 similar spaces, and another 47 by the end of 2026. Currently, there are already 33 underground shelter schools operating in Ukraine. Construction is taking place thanks to the joint efforts of the state and local authorities. In 2024–2025, more than 13 billion hryvnias were invested in these projects.

In addition, the government has decided to allocate 500 million hryvnias for the purchase of school buses for frontline communities, including Kherson. Over the past three years, more than 1,500 buses have been purchased to transport students.
