The NGO Women in Media has launched a survey among Ukrainian female journalists to collect data on their experiences with risks linked to the use of artificial intelligence. According to the organization, these risks include online violence, smear campaigns, and the spread of fake content.
Representatives of the NGO explained that the research aims to raise awareness among newsrooms about digital threats, while also contributing to the development of practical recommendations, support programs, and policies to protect female journalists. The survey is confidential and will remain open until September 10, 2025.
The urgency of the project is underscored by recent cases of AI misuse. In July, investigative journalist Olena Mudra was targeted with a fabricated video featuring false accusations, while in August a deepfake video circulated on Facebook showing TV host Alla Mazur allegedly promoting a “varicose vein remedy.” Similar fake content has also targeted Natalia Moseichuk and Marichka Padalko.
Earlier in June and July, the Telegram channel Joker spread AI-generated content against Dzerkalo Tyzhnia editor-in-chief Yulia Mostova and editor Inna Vedernikova. The materials included zoormorphic images, fabricated news about the deaths of relatives, and misogynistic content.
According to previous Women in Media research, more than 60% of Ukrainian female journalists have already faced various forms of online violence. These include trolling in comments, misogynistic remarks, disinformation campaigns, and threats, while some reported doxxing, deepfake manipulation, and revenge porn.
