Mammoth tusk discovered in Poltava region during clay excavation

In the Poltava region, a mammoth tusk was uncovered during clay excavation near the Orzhytsia River. The artifact was found on the edge of a forested area where local residents had been digging clay.

According to the Center for the Protection and Research of Archaeological Monuments, local historian Nataliia Pohorelova from the village of Zarig brought the item to the institution for identification. Experts confirmed that the find is indeed a fragment of a mammoth tusk.

The remains of the extinct animal were located close to the surface, which caused significant erosion and rendered the artifact unsuitable for museum preservation. Archaeologists suggest that the tusk was carried by a glacier along with clay deposits and became embedded in the upper slope of the terrace on the right bank of the Orzhytsia River.

This is not the first such discovery in the region. Back in 2005, archaeologists at the quarry of the Tarasivka brick factory unearthed mammoth bones, followed later by fragments of tusks and other remains of the extinct animal in deeper soil layers.

Experts emphasize that such discoveries provide valuable insights into the Paleolithic history of Poltava region and help reconstruct the life of ancient animals in this part of Ukraine.
