Demand for technical specialties will grow, but not immediately

An increase in interest in engineering and natural sciences in Ukraine will become noticeable in a few years. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mykhailo Vynnytskyi, commenting on the results of the 2025 admission campaign.

According to him, the popularity of technical fields among applicants is influenced not only by the conditions at universities but also by the level of training at the school stage. “Obviously, the problem is not at the stage of admission to the university, but earlier,” Vynnytskyi wrote. That is why this year the state has allocated 500 million hryvnias to create STEM laboratories in schools and is also launching a high school as part of the NUS reform. However, these measures, according to the official, will have an effect not earlier than in 3-4 years.

To support the development of technical specialties, the Ministry of Education and Science has increased the volume of state orders. Electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and agronomy received the most places. The government also increased scholarships for students studying in these specialties and introduced additional financial incentives for contract students, including a 1.5 coefficient in the calculation of grants.

Another area of support was investments in the material and technical base of universities. Nine Ukrainian universities are already receiving new laboratory equipment for research in the field of natural and technical sciences.

Separately, the Deputy Minister responded to accusations of non-compliance with the declared values: both the Minister’s son and the son of the specialized Deputy Minister are studying in Ukraine, both of whom have chosen to study for a bachelor’s degree in physics.

During the 2025 admission campaign, 816,000 applications were submitted for bachelor’s and master’s programs, which is 3% more than last year. The most popular fields of study remain humanities and social sciences: management, psychology, law, philology, economics, as well as medicine and computer science.
