In the first six months of 2025, 86,795 children were born in Ukraine, and 249,002 people died. This data was released by the Ministry of Justice. The statistics show that there are three deaths per newborn – a trend that has remained constant for five years in a row.

The birth rate remained almost unchanged over the year: 87,655 children were born in Ukraine in the same period in 2024. Despite the war, some regions even recorded a slight increase in the number of newborns. In particular, in Kyiv region – +6%, in Lviv region – +5%, in Volyn – +6%. In total, seven regions of the country recorded an increase.

The largest number of babies is traditionally born in Kyiv – 9,947 babies (12% of the total number of newborns). The second place is occupied by Lviv region (8,282 babies, 10%), and the third by Dnipropetrovs’k region (6,670, or 8%).
At the same time, the number of births in regions close to the frontline is decreasing significantly. In Donetsk region, this figure has almost halved over the year (-47%), in Kherson region – by 11%, and in Chernihiv region – by 10%.
As in previous years, slightly more boys are born – about 51%.
Mortality in Ukraine remains consistently high. In the first half of 2025, 249,002 people died – almost the same number as last year (250,972). Most people die in Dnipropetrovska oblast – 27,120 deaths, which is about one in nine deaths in the country. Kyiv (18,114 deaths) and Kharkiv (17,694) are also in the top three regions with the highest rates.

The overall demographic trend remains negative. Over the past ten years, the birth rate in Ukraine has decreased by 2.2 times: from 191,000 in 2016 to less than 87,000 in 2025. The average monthly number of newborns has fallen from 32,000 to 14,000. The rate of population decline exceeds 300 thousand people per year.
