The admission campaign is underway in Ukraine, and this year applicants are once again taking the national multi-subject test, which has replaced the External Independent Evaluation for the fourth year in a row. Serhiy Babak, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, said that law remains the most popular study programme among Ukrainian students.
As of the beginning of 2025, more than 75,000 students have chosen law, which is about seven per cent of the total number. It is followed by management – more than 62 thousand students, psychology – more than 59 thousand, secondary education in subject specialities – more than 52 thousand, and computer science – more than 37 thousand.
At the same time, Sergiy Babak drew attention to a noticeable imbalance between the popularity of certain areas and the real needs of the economy. “There is already a shortage of specialists in the technical and natural sciences. And I think everyone understands that this demand will only grow when it comes to large-scale reconstruction of the country. That is why it was important for me that we launched a subvention for natural science classrooms. To provide schools with not only motivation, but also the opportunity to study the exact and natural sciences,” he stressed.
Babak also noted that the country’s recovery is impossible without skilled workers – builders, welders, electricians, mechanics or machine operators. No infrastructure reform or investment project will have any effect without trained workers, and such specialists are trained by the vocational education system.
