Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, at least 200 Ukrainian artists and 103 journalists, both Ukrainian and foreign, have been killed. This was reported by the Monitoring Center for Cultural Strategies in Crisis (MCSC), which systematically records losses among cultural and media representatives.
Among the dead artists are artists, writers, musicians, actors, directors, and cultural managers. Some of them took part in hostilities as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while others were victims of shelling or died while performing professional or volunteer duties.

Journalists and media professionals who worked in the war covered events at the front, recorded crimes against civilians, documented the course of hostilities, and helped the world receive true information about events in Ukraine. Due to constant shelling, targeted attacks on civilian infrastructure and disregard for international humanitarian law, professional activities in the media have become dangerous.
The ICRC emphasizes the need to preserve the names of the victims in national memory. Their contribution to the development of culture, journalism and the struggle for freedom is part of Ukraine’s modern history.
