70,000 Ukrainians with amputations: veterans invited to free 3D prosthetics course

Ukrainian veterans can join a free introductory course on 3D modelling in the field of prosthetics. The educational programme aims to provide participants with basic skills in 3D scanning, modelling, printing and working with innovative equipment. The course ‘3D modelling and printing in engineering and biomedicine’ is taught by a team of teachers from the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

Upon completion of the course, veterans will be able to apply for a grant to study for a master’s degree at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in Biomedical Engineering or Applied Mechanics. As part of the master’s programme, students will work on the creation of prosthetic components – from 50 to 100 samples, which will be donated to medical institutions free of charge.

The project is being implemented as part of the ADDEX initiative “The Future of Prosthetics in Ukraine”, which aims to address current challenges: shortage of specialists, high cost of imported prostheses, limited technological capabilities and the need for personalised rehabilitation products. The Kolo Charitable Foundation, KPI Science Park, and partner companies are working on the programme: OLX, EPAM, appflame, OBRIO and Genesis for Ukraine.

There are currently more than 70,000 people with amputations in Ukraine, and this number is expected to grow. Courses and training programmes should be the first step towards the development of local production of high-quality and affordable prostheses.
