Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 200 Ukrainian artists and 102 media representatives, including 7 foreign journalists, have been killed. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
The ministry stressed that these figures reflect not only the scale of human losses, but are also a painful reminder of the tragic pages of Ukrainian history. According to the ministry, Russia’s current targeted attacks on Ukraine’s cultural elite are reminiscent of the crimes of the Stalinist regime in the 1920s and 1930s, when an entire generation of Ukrainian artists was killed, known as the ‘Executed Renaissance’.

The ICCC stressed that it is not just about the loss of talented people, but about the loss of a part of the national soul. Every Ukrainian artist is a unique personality who enriched culture and shaped national identity.
The Ministry also highlighted the role of journalists who work in constant danger every day, recording the course of the war, investigating crimes and conveying the truth to Ukrainian and international society.
The media collect facts, testimonies, stories – everything that will later become not only a chronicle of the war, but also evidence of crimes committed against Ukraine. Their work, as noted by the ICRC, is about strength, courage and dedication.
