The birth rate in Ukraine has reached a historic low

The birth rate in Ukraine has fallen to a historic low, dropping to 0.9 children per woman. This is the lowest rate in the country’s history. Prior to the full-scale invasion in 2022, the fertility rate was higher at 1.16 children per woman, which is already well below the international standard of reproduction of 2.2 children per woman.

The average fertility rate in the European Union is higher and amounts to 1.5 children per woman. Experts attribute the decline in the birth rate in Ukraine to the ongoing military conflict, which forces many citizens to postpone having children or even store biomaterials for the future in the hope of improving the situation in the country.

As DW notes, this decline in the birth rate raises concerns about the demographic situation and the country’s future. Falling birth rates can lead to long-term economic and social problems
