The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is negotiating with European countries on the possibility of teaching Ukrainian as a second foreign language in their schools. This should help Ukrainian students abroad avoid overload and reduce the spread of Russian among them.

This was announced by Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi during an hour of government questions in the Verkhovna Rada. According to him, Ukrainian children who find themselves in Europe because of the war often face the need to learn three languages simultaneously: the local language, the main foreign language (most often English or another European language), and the second foreign language. To reduce the burden, they often choose Russian, which is understandable to many.
The Ministry of Education and Science proposes an alternative – to make Ukrainian available as a second foreign language. The minister stressed that this initiative has already received support from the education authorities of several European countries. Particular progress has been made in the countries where most Ukrainian children are currently living.
Oksen Lisovyi stressed that the introduction of the Ukrainian language into the curriculum of European schools will not only help Ukrainian students, but will also promote the Ukrainian language in the world.
