Ukraine’s population could drop to 25 million by 2050

By 2050, Ukraine’s population could decline to 25 million people, and by the end of the century — to 15 million. This is reported by The Washington Post, citing government data.

As of 2024, about 36 million people live in Ukraine – 5 million fewer than before the start of the full-scale war. Another 5 million Ukrainians remain abroad, and territories with a population of 5 million are under Russian occupation.

According to the Minister of Justice, the death rate is almost three times higher than the birth rate. The war led to significant losses: some citizens died, some left or remained under occupation, which creates serious demographic challenges.

If the trends continue, the population decline will affect the economy, social sphere and the country’s reconstruction. Experts point to labour shortages, a burden on the pension system and a change in the demographic balance as consequences.

The government is already taking steps to support the birth rate and maintain ties with Ukrainians abroad. In particular, it is implementing reintegration programmes, free fertility treatment for the military, and incentives for the return of labour migrants. At the same time, experts emphasise the need for long-term strategies, including improving conditions for young families, economic recovery and security.
