The Superhumans Centre in Lviv performed a unique reconstructive surgery — transplanting the second toe onto the site of the lost thumb. The patient, Nazar, a soldier who was seriously wounded at the front, lost one arm and the finger responsible for the main grasping function on the other.

To restore his ability to hold objects, Ukrainian surgeons, together with their British colleagues, performed a complex microsurgical procedure. The operation lasted several hours. It was necessary to connect the bones, blood vessels, nerves and tendons so that the transplanted finger would become functional — with sensitivity, mobility and blood supply.
Just one month after the operation, Nazar can unscrew bottle caps and pick up small objects. He now faces several months of rehabilitation. However, doctors believe that the chances of a full recovery of hand function are high.
This is the first such operation in the history of Superhumans, a centre specialising in reconstructive surgery, prosthetics, rehabilitation and psychological support for people affected by Russian aggression.
According to clinic representatives, about 120 operations are performed here every month. Some of them cannot be publicly disclosed for security reasons, but the centre continues to bring together the best doctors from Ukraine and around the world to help war victims.
