Veterans with combat experience will be able to teach basic general military training at universities

Veterans with combat experience who have obtained a master’s degree will be able to teach basic general military training (BGMT) at universities. This was announced by Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi at the presentation of the study ‘Transition from Military Service to Civilian Life: Contexts, Experiences, Solutions’ by the NGO Principle.

The programme will start on 1 September at all universities across the country. The minister said that there is currently a need for 600 teachers of basic military training.

‘It is important to have a higher education, a master’s degree. The theoretical part of the Basic Military Training will be taught by people employed at universities. The practical part will be taught at training grounds,’ he added.

Lisovyi noted that, if necessary, veterans can be helped with a pedagogical master’s degree.

In addition, veterans can be employed in centres that teach military training to schoolchildren. According to Lisovyi, the updated school subject ‘Defence of Ukraine’ is currently being taught in a ‘bush method’. That is, schools visit centres where professionals teach.

The minister noted that there are currently 980 centres in Ukraine. They need to involve people with practical combat experience.
