In Brussels, the buildings of the European Commission and the Council of the EU were lit up in blue and yellow to mark the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This action symbolises support for Ukraine in its struggle for independence and a future in the European community.
The European Commission said in a statement that the colours of the Ukrainian flag have become a symbol of resistance to imperialism. The statement also emphasises that the EU remains steadfast in its support for the Ukrainian people and sees Ukraine as a future member of the Union.
Similar gestures of solidarity in European capitals take place every year on the anniversary of the invasion. In the coming days, EU countries are expected to announce new initiatives in support of Ukraine.
